Housing has become unaffordable for ordinary people. Rents keep climbing, home ownership is slipping out of reach, and too many Australians, including pensioners, young families, single people and those on lower incomes, are being pushed to the edge. Many have the will and the means to house themselves affordably through a tiny home, but the law keeps getting in the way.
Because tiny homes on wheels are classed as caravans, the rules vary wildly from council to council. In many areas you cannot legally live in one full-time, or you are limited in how many days you can stay. There is no clear, consistent framework. People who simply want to house themselves affordably and lawfully are left tangled in red tape.
Other countries have shown a better way. In parts of Canada and the United States, planning rules have been updated to formally allow tiny homes and tiny-home communities, with sensible safety and service standards. These reforms have helped create genuinely affordable housing and supported small, connected communities, without the huge cost of conventional development. Australia can do the same.
This is not about lowering standards. It is about removing the unnecessary barriers that stop willing, capable Australians from housing themselves affordably and legally.
Change happens when enough people speak up. Share this campaign with anyone who believes Australians deserve affordable, secure housing options.
