Tiny Home Kitchen: Mistakes, Must-Haves & What Makes a Great One

Plan your tiny kitchen around what actually works in a small space — and dodge the regrets people most often have after they build.

🚩 The 10 biggest tiny-home kitchen mistakes

  1. Not enough pantry space — the most overlooked feature.
  2. Too many cupboards and not enough drawers.
  3. A sink that is too small for pots and trays.
  4. No ventilation — leading to condensation and mould.
  5. Heavy stone benchtops on a home on wheels (weight!).
  6. Not enough power points where you actually need them.
  7. Not enough bench (preparation) space.
  8. No dedicated rubbish and recycling spot.
  9. Cheap hinges and drawer runners that fail early.
  10. Forgetting to plan for future appliance upgrades.

What makes a great tiny kitchen

1. Storage is king

Full-height pantry, deep drawers, pull-outs and overheads to the ceiling. Avoid big empty voids behind cupboards.

2. Multi-purpose benchtops

A fold-down bench, pull-out board or sink cover turns one surface into prep space, dining and a workstation.

3. Energy efficiency

Induction or LPG cooking, an efficient fridge, LED lighting and solar-friendly appliances keep your power system small.

4. Lightweight materials

Plywood cabinetry, bamboo benchtops and aluminium splashbacks save weight on a THOW. Avoid heavy stone throughout.

5. Easy-to-clean surfaces

Laminate benchtops, acrylic splashbacks and stainless sinks wipe down fast.

6. Proper ventilation

A rangehood plus an opening window and a roof vent cut condensation, mould and cooking smells.

7. Full-size where it counts

A full-size fridge and standard sink if space allows; save space with a dishwasher drawer and a combo oven.

8. Deep drawers over cupboards

You see pots, pans and food without crawling into a dark cupboard.

9. Real pantry space

A pull-out or full-height pantry often adds more day-to-day value than a bigger fridge.

10. Future-proof design

Leave room to add a dishwasher, water filter, bigger fridge or solar upgrade later.

✅ Must-have checklist

  • Cabinets: full-height pantry, deep drawers, soft-close hardware
  • Benchtops: durable laminate, extra preparation space
  • Sink: large single bowl, pull-out mixer tap
  • Appliances: induction or LPG cooktop, combo microwave/convection oven, efficient fridge
  • Storage: pull-out pantry, overhead cupboards, hidden storage
  • Off-grid: water filter, solar-friendly appliances, LED lighting
  • Ventilation: rangehood, opening window, roof vent
Watch the weight. Heavy materials — stone benchtops, solid timber cabinetry — are a common and costly mistake on a tiny home on wheels. Plan your kitchen against your trailer's limit with our Weight calculator, and explore each part of the kitchen from the Kitchen hub.
