Tiny House GuideBack to Building

Tiny House Weight Calculator

A tiny house on wheels in Australia must stay under 4,500 kg total (Aggregate Trailer Mass). Adjust each component to estimate your total weight.

Road dimensions & towing capacity

Weight is only half the story. To tow on Australian roads without an oversize permit, your home must also stay within the legal dimensions (set nationally under the Australian Design Rules):

  • Width: 2.5m maximum, including everything fixed to the outside (awnings, guards, handles)
  • Height: 4.3m maximum, measured from the road surface
  • Length: 12.5m maximum

Exceed any of these and it becomes an oversize load needing a permit. On towing: a tiny home of around 3 to 4 tonnes (plus roughly 500kg of belongings) generally needs a vehicle rated to tow 3.5 to 4.5 tonnes. A standard car (Class C) licence is fine provided you stay within the vehicle Gross Combination Mass (GCM); a heavier licence is only required for tow vehicles over 4.5 tonnes.

Important safety note: this is a rough planning estimate only. Real component weights vary widely, and an overloaded trailer is dangerous and illegal. The true weight of your build MUST be confirmed at a certified weighbridge. Staying under 4,500 kg keeps you in the light-vehicle category; above it you need different braking, licensing, and engineering. Always check current rules with your trailer manufacturer and local road authority. Last updated: June 2026.
